Excerpt from History of the 13th Infantry Regiment of Connecticut Volunteers, During the Great Rebellion

The following history was undertaken near the close of the year 1865, at the request of a certain publishing house, while the author was still actively engaged in military duties in the State of Georgia. It was substantially completed and ready for publication on the return of the Veteran Battalion to New York, May 1, 1866, and was soon afterwards placed in the hands of the intended publishers. Various circumstances caused long delays, and it finally became necessary to entrust it to the enterprising firm which now issues it to the public.

The book never would have been commenced, but for the earnest and repeated solicitations of the officers and friends of the regiment. It was composed at intervals in the midst of pressing duties and in spite of serious discouragements; and, although the author had collected many materials, the work was found to be so laborious that it would often have been at the point of abandonment, had he not been deeply impressed with a conviction that some permanent record ought to be made of the remarkable services of this regiment. Some public tribute, too, was due to the memory of those brave men, our departed compatriots, who gave up their lives so freely in battle, in hospital, or in prison, and whose heroic deeds ought to be inwoven with the legible history of the republic which they died to save.

Richard Owen F.R.S. (1804-92) was a controversial and influential palaeontologist and anatomist. Owen studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and at London's St Bartholomew's Hospital. He grew interested in anatomical research, and after qualifying he became assistant conservator in the museum of the Royal College of Surgeons, and then superintendent of natural history in the British Museum. He quickly became an authority on comparative anatomy and palaeontology, coining the term 'dinosaur' and founding the Natural History Museum. He was also a fierce critic of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection, and engaged in a long and bitter argument with Darwin's 'Bulldog', Thomas Huxley. Published in 1866, this is the first book in a highly illustrated three-volume set that comprises a thorough overview of vertebrate anatomy. This volume focuses on the anatomy of fishes and reptiles, and includes a preface that outlines the author's views on anatomical methodology.

Every successful engineer is a born inventor; indeed the daily work of an engineer in practice largely consists in scheming and devising from previous experience new and improved processes, methods, and details for accomplishing them, and for simplifying or cheapening old forms of machinery and the work they produce, to enable him to successfully compete with others, who are perhaps as ingenious and enterprising as himself. .I nthe work of designing machinery the draughtsman has to rely mainly on his memory for inspiration ;and, for lack of an idea, has frequently to wade through numerous volumes to find a detail or movement to effect a particular purpose. Hence, as a rule, every mans work runs in a groove, his productions generally having the stamp of his particular experience and training clearly marked upon them. In the course of twenty-five years of such experience, I have found the want of such a volume as the present, and endeavoured to supply the deficiency in my own practice by private notes and sketches, gathered promiscuously, until the difficulty of selection and arrangement became so apparent that I began to classify them, as they exist in the following pages. A few weeks of unusual leisure have enabled me to complete this work and amplify it by numerous additions, and it is now presented in the hope that it will be found of equal service to others engaged in the head-splitting, exhausting work of scheming and devising machinery, than which I can conceive of no head-work more wearing and anxious.
